  • Installation of water treatment systems
  • Waste reduction

These practices have minimized environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and waste generation.

The garden park in Emmendingen Schwarzwald, black forest by Waldemar

St. Mary Magdalene Church

Recreation sports fields and amphitheater created from approximately five acres of previously unusable property due to uneven land terrain

Our Role

Sociis natoque penatibus et magnis dis parturient montes, nascetur ridiculus mus. Nulla vitae elit libero, a pharetra augue.

The Beneficial Reuse

St. Mary Magdalene Church utilized 85,000 tons of foundry byproducts instead of mined fill material from the nearest quarry to create a soccer field, baseball field and amphitheater.

Value Created
  • The Church was able to avoid costs on 85,000 tons of virgin materials
  • The foundry was able to divert 85,000 tons from a landfill with limited capacity

Swan Park

Provided foundry by-products to use as the fill material to construct a sledding and recreational hill development.

  • Approximately 40 feet of by-product depth used to create a sledding and recreation hill providing approximately 50 feet of total height.
  • Parking expansion and ice skating rink / basketball courts installed alongside the sledding and recreation hill.
  • Slopes of 3:1 and 4:1 installed for a variety of levels of speed.
  • Native soil including 4 inches of topsoil will be the final cover.

Diverted materials from the landfill for a premier recreation area, enhancing this public park.

The Daanen & Janssen Inc. Quarry Reclamation Project

The ash, generated from the WPS Pulliam Plant in Green Bay, WI, was encapsulated with a 3-foot re-compacted clay liner and 2-foot re-compacted clay cap to prevent migration.

The project was designed to reclaim the northern portion of the inactive quarry and provide winter activities such as sledding, cross country skiing, and snowboarding, as well as summer activities such as hiking, biking, rock climbing, and zip lining.

  • The use of industrial by-products in the construction of the recreational hill provided cost savings to Daanen & Janssen, Inc.
  • We preserved landfill space, conserved natural resources, and reduced CO2 emissions by repurposing approximately 230,000 cubic yards of coal fly and bottom ash.

Thiel Gravel Pit – Highwall Reclamation Project

Gravel pits and quarries in the state of Wisconsin are required to reclaim high walls to safe and stable conditions once mining operations are complete. Foundry by-products are valuable to pit owners who lack native soils for reclaiming highwalls.

  • Created construction drawings and quantity estimates
  • Obtained project permitting
  • Supervised construction process
  • Provided recycled material
  • Cost savings compared to virgin materials and landfill fees.
  • Beneficially used over 70,000 cubic yards of foundry by-products.
  • Preserved landfill space
